Driving Instructor Training

There are two possible ways to pursue the Instructor certification:

Direct Application Without Attempting Tests

Submit your application with original qualifications directly to RSA to demonstrate that your existing qualifications and experience adequately meet the ADI standard.

Driving Instructor Three-Stage Test

The Driving Instructor Training applicant has to clear three stages for the judgement of the applicant’s qualification on various grounds. It is mandatory to pass each stage before progressing to the next stage.

Stage 1: Pass ADI Theory

ADI theory test is a computer-based multiple-choice test and the score is valid for two years. You can attempt the test unlimitedly by paying €150.00 each time.

  • Receive your 9-digit ProMetric Eligibility Number from the RSA after submitting your application.
  • Book a theory test slot at one of RSA’s 40+ theory test centre locations nationwide.
  • Prepare and attempt the test.
  • You will receive the test result immediately.

Stage 2: Pass ADI Driving Test

This test will be at your selected centre to assess your driving standard against tough parameters, including road safety and technical driving skills.

  • The test is 60 to 100 minutes long and the fee is €200.00.
  • You need to present either a paper or digital copy of the Certificate of Motor Insurance.
  • The examiner will share feedback and the result immediately after the test.

Stage 3: ADI Instructional Ability Test

You can apply for the ADI instructional ability test only within two years of passing the ADI driving test.

You will receive an email from the Driver Education Section containing the form and details for the Stage 3 test. The fee for this test is the same as for the Stage 2.

The results will be declared to you within 10 days.

Driving Instructor Application to RSA

Application Prerequisites

You must possess the following prerequisites for driving instructor application in Tallaght:

  • Be at least 21 years old, a resident in Ireland and medically fit to drive.
  • Be tax compliant and possess a tax clearance certificate.
  • Hold a full driving licence for a minimum of two years in the category you want to teach driving.
  • Pass Garda vetting check and the three test stages to acquire a driving instructor certificate.

Required Form Details

You can complete the Digital ADI Form by filling in the required details:

  • Your personal details and contact details
  • Personal public services number (PPSN)
  • Current tax clearance access number
  • Full, valid driver number
  • Categories for which you want to give driving instruction

Time Required to Become A Driving Instructor

You can apply to become a driving instructor only if you have held a full driving licence for at least 2 years. The entire qualification process, including the initial application, the intensive three-stage test, and final registration, generally spans 6 to 18 months depending on your proficiency and preparation timeline.

After successfully clearing the Stage 2 test, you can apply for a trainee instructor licence valid for six months, provided you have never held a trainee licence in the past. This licence grants you the benefit of practicing and training driving students while gaining real-world experience under an authorised driving institute.

While a trainee instructor licence cannot be renewed under normal circumstances, exceptions can prevail if you provide the RSA with clear evidence of mitigating circumstances for not using your first licence.

How long is my ADI permit valid?
